TELETASK and KBC Insurance: the role of home automation in insurance and energy management

Recently, TELETASK was invited to an event hosted by KBC (a major Belgian bank) and KBC Insurance to give a presentation to the 22 largest Flemish KBC insurance brokers. This session, which was held at our headquarters in Ghent, provided us with the opportunity to explain how TELETASK home automation not only manages standard home functions such as lighting and heating but also integrates the latest energy systems in an intelligent way, outlining the benefits for residents, lenders, and insurance companies.

How home automation adds surprising value to the insurance sector

For banks and insurers, accurately assessing risks is crucial when offering insurance products, particularly in the context of the energy transition and the prevailing local and European regulations. When a bank requires a mortgage insurance policy or an investment loan for professionals, it is essential for insurers to have a clear understanding of home automation systems and their advantages for (re)builders. This knowledge allows them to correctly assess risks and better understand the benefits of such technologies for property owners.

Moreover, the level of integration of technologies such as photovoltaic (PV) panels, storage batteries, charging stations for electric vehicles, and their intelligent control plays a significant role in the long-term value retention of a property. In cases of a forced sale, this is important not only for the owner but also for financial institutions and insurers.

A smart and integrated approach

From this perspective, TELETASK provided a comprehensive explanation at the event about how our systems can connect various technologies. Thanks to built-in features and integrations with PV inverters, charging stations, and digital energy meters, these technologies can work together efficiently.

A concrete example: when a resident needs hot water, the system can temporarily pause the charging process of an electric vehicle to prioritize the electric water heater. This entire process happens automatically, without requiring any intervention from the residents.

In addition to TELETASK, the study and consultancy firm ECOWISE also gave a presentation. They specialize in calculations for large PV installations, optimizing the capacity of solar panels and batteries to create the most cost-effective setup. Their advice perfectly aligns with TELETASK’s overall home automation solution, both for residential and commercial buildings.

New insights and interest from the industry

This information evening was a unique opportunity for TELETASK to engage with a new audience. We noticed that the session brought a lot of clarity to attendees who are not typically considered stakeholders in the home automation industry. The level of interest was high. During the event itself, an insurance office planning a new building expressed concrete interest in these innovative solutions. Rather than asking ‘if’ they should adopt them, the conversation was more about ‘how’.

This session not only contributed to the knowledge of the participants but also built a bridge between home automation, energy management, and insurance. We are grateful to KBC Bank and KBC Insurance for this valuable opportunity and hope to have contributed to a better understanding of energy management in modern, future-oriented homes and buildings. It also became clear that good energy consultancy, such as that provided by ECOWISE, is far from a luxury, it is a necessity.

Note: This session was recognized as part of the mandatory regular training sessions that KBC Insurance provides for its specialists.
